Along with creating Lego Mosaic Portraits and art, I design nameplates, logo's out of Lego bricks and other various art that utilizes the small toy elements.  Business' and individual clients have enjoyed  the mosaics and recreation of logo's, great art pieces or their favorite superhero.  Here are a few of my latest commissioned pieces.

Statue of Liberty Lego Art Mosaic

I wanted to capture the idea of the Statue of Liberty without recreating the complete picture.  I tend to crop my designs in this way for effect.  Here are a few of these designs.

Building with lego plates for designing mosaic portraits

Lego plates offer an alternative to building with lego bricks and have several benefits as well.  The plate is 1/3 as thick and many times is more stable when installing on a lego baseplate.  The look of the mosaic is the same whether bricks or plates are used, however.  Generally if the mosaic is designed to hang as is with the lego frame than I will continue to use bricks (some plates are much more expensive than the brick counterpart).  If a customer is looking to frame the art work in a traditional frame than the plate offers a great alternative because of its thickness.  Shipping costs are greatly reduced with a plate mosaic as well. 

There are endless possibilities with lego building and designing and I continue to enjoy creating custom mosaics. 

What size to choose for my lego mosaic art

I enjoy creating lego mosaics and find myself designing in many sizes.  For some designs a small 15 x 15 inch design works well and captures a closeup well.  Lego bricks are essentially a 'pixel' type art and therefore the larger the design -the greater the detail.  Recently I have been working with couple portraits and have found that a 20 x 20 design works well or a 15 x 30 inch design.  Larger 30 x 45 inch designs enhance any photo and are sure to get noticed.  Many times it comes down to price.  The image is a 15 x30 and was able to capture this family portrait well.  Generally this works best for two faces.  Let me know what you think.

What colors do you use in creating your lego mosaic art portraits

Many times I get asked about using various colors in my lego art.  although there are a large spectrum of colors available and various shades of some colors, more is not always better. 

Keeping it simple.  Using negative space and creating an effect with a few colors appears more appealing than filling the lego mosaic with 'all' colors available.

The Cost.  Cost is also a factor and can sometimes price out some customers.  It is not unheard of to pay any where from .05 to .20 cents per lego element and if you are creating a 20 x 20 inch design you might be installing close to 2500 pieces!

Common colors.  Generally White, black, light and dark bluish gray are some basic colors I use in most designs.  Colors such as medium orange and blue, yellow,brown and tan are also frequently used with moderation.

The design process begins with finding the right mix of color and transferring that over to lego colors.

The Lego Book review

It has been some time since my last post. I have been working on my Lego mosaic website, facebook page and creating a large number of custom mosaics for customers around the globe. My hope is to post here regularly and showcase my latest ideas and creations.

I wanted to also mention a lego book which you might find of interest. 'The Lego Book' written by Daniel lipkowitz provides a brief history of the Lego company , showcases the evolution of the LEgo brick and takes you through the important developments and sets year by year. This is a must read for the lego fan and those wanting a bit more history of LEGO.
